Two ways to position, because the two jobs are different. For a one-off, drag it where it looks right. For something that has to land in the same spot on every document you produce, type the numbers.

That last point is worth a sentence of its own: because position is relative to the page rather than measured in absolute points, the same setting lands in the same visual place on a letter page and an A4 page in the same file.

On top is the default and keeps everything else about the file intact. Behind draws the text under the existing page content, which is how you get a watermark that does not obscure what it is marking.

What this does not do

This adds new text on top of a page. It does not edit the text that is already there — if you need to correct a typo in the original document, you need a full PDF editor, not this. It also does not fill in interactive form fields; it draws text at a position you choose, which works fine on a printed form but is not the same thing.
